How Random Password Generators Work
A secure password generator removes the predictable habits people introduce when inventing passwords. The best generators use a cryptographically secure source of randomness and select each element without avoidable bias.
Why human “random” is not very random
People favour familiar words, meaningful numbers, repeated shapes and common substitutions. Even when we try to be unpredictable, our choices are influenced by memory and habit.
A random generator instead draws from a defined set of possible characters or words using a source designed to produce unpredictable values.
Cryptographically secure randomness
UsefulFox uses the browser Web Crypto API to obtain cryptographically strong random values on the device. That is different from a simple pseudo-random function intended for games, animation or sampling.
The generated password does not need to be sent to UsefulFox for generation. You should still treat anything displayed on screen as sensitive and use a trusted, updated device.
Why unbiased character selection matters
A generator should give every allowed character the intended chance of being selected. A simple remainder operation can create a tiny modulo bias when the random-number range does not divide evenly by the character-pool size.
UsefulFox uses rejection sampling: random values in the small uneven tail are discarded and redrawn before a character is selected. This keeps selection uniform across the chosen pool.
How UsefulFox estimates entropy
For a random character password, the tool estimates entropy from the selected pool size and password length. For a random-word passphrase, it uses the number of words in the built-in list and the number of independent word selections.
This figure describes the generator’s theoretical selection space. It is not a promise that an account cannot be compromised, and it should not be used to rate a password you invented yourself.
Create a private random password locally in your browser, then save it securely and use it for one account only.

Does UsefulFox send generated passwords to a server?
The generator creates passwords locally in the browser using the Web Crypto API; the generated value does not need to be sent to UsefulFox for generation.
What is cryptographic randomness?
It is randomness produced by a source designed for security-sensitive uses, where future values should be impractical to predict from previous outputs.
What is modulo bias?
It is a small unevenness that can occur when random integers are mapped to a pool with a simple remainder operation and the ranges do not divide evenly.
Does a high entropy estimate guarantee security?
No. It describes the random selection space, not every way an account could be attacked or a credential could be stolen.
